CHAPTER FOURTEEN
I woke up feeling like shit. Actually, ‘woke up’ implied that I’d slept, which I wasn’t sure I had. Passed out, yes, but not slept. I felt exhausted, with a lingering hangover that promised to get worse before it got better. Just as I was about to vow to never drink again, I remembered why I’d started pounding shots of tequila in the first place.
I’d witnessed another murder.
I ran to the living room in search of my cell phone, clutching my forehead to try and quell the stabbing pain I felt. I’d taken a picture of it this time—that much I knew. But the second I opened my purse to search for it, the memory of dropping it as I fled the scene slapped me. It was long gone.
“Dammit,” I said, throwing my purse at the door. That picture would have blown any doubts I had about what I’d seen that night out of the water. The night in Greek Row too, for that matter. I couldn’t imagine physical evidence into existence. Even Charlie couldn’t argue that.
But she could argue that I imagined taking the picture in the first place…
Then I looked over at the door, where the contents of my purse lay strewn about the floor. A folded piece of white paper nearly shouted at me to pick it up. I walked over and plucked it up, unfolding it as I did. My heart skipped a beat when I looked down at the face of the murderer I’d seen last night.
Panic crept in around me. I dropped the sketch to the floor like it had burned me, and I tugged at the collar of my T-shirt, trying to breathe. I suddenly needed to get out of my apartment—far away from that sketch. I needed to be in a large space with lots of people. Lots of potential witnesses.
I ran to my room, threw on a hoodie over my shirt, and pulled on some jeans. A pair of sneakers later, I was ready to go. It was later in the morning than I’d realized (hangovers will do that), so I had class in twenty minutes.
As I made my way to campus, I realized that losing my phone posed more of an issue than not having the evidence I needed, or the potential for the murderer to track me. It also meant that I didn’t have a phone. I had a break after teaching, which would give me enough time to run to the store to get a new one. With that plan in mind, I made my way to the chemistry building, reeking of booze and cigarettes.
I threw my things down on the desk and started to unpack until something in the back of the room caught my eye. A familiar face was smiling at me when I looked up at him. Fenris… My day was about to get a whole lot more interesting.
He started toward me, and I looked down to dig through my backpack, looking for my teaching textbook.
